Buy Nothing Day: one day, one rule, and how to win it

Updated

Buy Nothing Day is a 24-hour challenge to spend no money at all, held on the busiest shopping day of the year. In 2026 it falls on Friday 27 November (Black Friday) in the US, Canada, the UK, Finland and Sweden, and on Saturday 28 November in most other countries. There is one rule, which is to buy nothing until midnight. Everything below is how to make that rule easy to keep.

It is also the shortest no-spend challenge there is, which makes it a good first one. If you have never managed 30 days, you can manage one, and one day won is a start you can build on.

Where did Buy Nothing Day come from?

Buy Nothing Day was started by the Canadian artist Ted Dave in 1992 and picked up soon after by Adbusters, the Vancouver-based magazine that still promotes it (Wikipedia). It began as a protest against overconsumption, timed to clash on purpose with Black Friday.

The timing is the point. The NRF expected a record 186.9 million people to shop between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday in 2025, 130.4 million of them on Black Friday itself (NRF). Spending nothing on that particular day is a bigger result than spending nothing on a quiet Tuesday in March.

You do not have to care about the protest to take part. Plenty of people do it just to see whether they can, and that is a perfectly good reason.

What counts as “buying” on Buy Nothing Day?

Anything you pay for that day counts, whether it is in a shop, online or in an app. The cases that catch people out:

Situation Counts? Why
Rent, a bill or a subscription that auto-pays that day No You decided it weeks ago. The day is about new decisions
Bus or train fare to get to work No, if you write it down first It is a need you cannot move
Coffee on the way in Yes It is the most common slip of the day
Food delivery or a takeaway Yes Plan dinner the night before
An online order placed “for later” Yes Clicking buy is buying, whenever it ships
Adding to a cart or a wishlist No Saving it for later is the habit you want
A pre-order or “buy now, pay later” checkout Yes You are still buying, just paying later
Groceries Yes, unless you write them in Easiest to shop on Thursday instead

The rule that settles any grey area is simple. If you would have to decide to spend it today, it counts. Spending that was already decided does not.

How do you prepare the day before?

Most of the work happens the day before, so the day itself only asks you to stay put.

  1. Write your exceptions. One line each: transport, medicine, anything that genuinely cannot wait. Keep it to three or fewer.
  2. Shop for food on Thursday. Breakfast, lunch and dinner for Friday, with something you actually look forward to eating.
  3. Unsubscribe or mute the sale emails. Black Friday week is when the inbox is loudest, and the email is designed to win.
  4. Log out of the shopping apps on your phone, or move them off the home screen. One extra step is often enough.
  5. Plan one thing to do. A walk, a film you already own, a library visit, a game night. An empty Friday fills itself with browsing.

If you want more ideas for that last one, there are thirty of them in things to do instead of shopping.

What do you do when the urge hits during the day?

Expect at least one urge, and decide now what you will do when it comes. The best response is a delay, not a fight.

  • Put it on a list instead of in the cart. Write the item, the price and the date. If you still want it in a week, you can decide then, with the sale over and the countdown timers gone.
  • Wait ten minutes. Most urges fade fast if you do not act on them straight away. Set a timer and do something with your hands.
  • Ask the one question: would I buy this at this price in September? That question is covered in more depth in how to not overspend on Black Friday.

NoBuy has both of these built in. “Tempted?” runs a ten-minute timer that keeps going with the phone locked, and the wishlist holds an item for 24 hours, 3 days or 7 days before it asks whether you still want it.

Is Buy Nothing Day the same as a Buy Nothing group?

No, though the names cause a lot of confusion. Buy Nothing Day is the one-day challenge described on this page.

Buy Nothing groups are a separate movement. Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark started it on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 2013, and it is now a network of local groups where neighbours give, lend and share things for free (Wikipedia).

The two fit well together. If something breaks on Buy Nothing Day, a local group is where you ask to borrow one before you buy one, and that is also a habit worth keeping after the day ends.

Does one day without spending actually change anything?

One day will not change your bank balance much. What it can change is how you see your own spending, because 24 hours is long enough to notice where the urges come from.

Most people come out of the day knowing three things they did not know before: the time of day they are most tempted, the app or shop that does it, and the feeling underneath it, which is usually boredom, tiredness or wanting a treat after a long week. That is real information, and it is the starting point for any longer challenge.

Write those three things down on Saturday morning, while you still remember them.

What should you do after Buy Nothing Day?

Turn the day into a streak. You have just done day one, and the cheapest way to keep the momentum is to treat Friday as the start of something longer.

If the day felt… Try next Where to start
Easy Carry on through Cyber Monday, then to the end of November No-Spend November
Hard, but you made it A 7-day challenge with one written exception No-spend challenge rules
You slipped once or twice Another single day next week, with the trigger planned for The notes you wrote on Saturday
You want a fresh start A 30-day run from 1 January No-Spend January

The one thing to avoid is deciding the day “didn’t count” because of a single coffee. A day with one slip is still most of a win. Mark it honestly, keep the score and go again.

A one-page plan for Buy Nothing Day

  • Thursday night: exceptions written, food bought, sale emails muted, shopping apps off the home screen.
  • Morning: breakfast at home and coffee from your own kitchen.
  • Midday: the one thing you planned. Go outside if you can.
  • Afternoon: the urge usually arrives here. Use the list, the ten minutes and the one question.
  • Evening: a dinner you planned and something you already own to watch, read or play.
  • Saturday morning: write down the three things you learned, then decide whether day two starts now.

Questions

When is Buy Nothing Day 2026?

In the US, Canada, the UK, Finland and Sweden it falls on Black Friday, Friday 27 November 2026. In most other countries it is held the next day, Saturday 28 November. Pick whichever date your own shopping pressure lands on.

What are the rules of Buy Nothing Day?

There is one rule, which is to buy nothing for 24 hours. Most people keep needs that are already set up running, like rent, bills that auto-pay and a bus fare to work, and cut everything else, including online orders, coffee and food delivery. Write your exceptions down the night before, so you are not deciding them at the till.

Is Buy Nothing Day the same as a Buy Nothing group?

No. Buy Nothing Day is a one-day protest against overconsumption, started in Canada in 1992 and promoted by Adbusters. Buy Nothing groups are local gift-economy communities where neighbours give and lend things for free, started on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 2013. They pair well, but they are different things.

Can I buy groceries on Buy Nothing Day?

Strictly, no, and the easy way to get through the day is to shop the day before. If you would rather not plan around it, write groceries in as your one exception with a list and a limit, and keep everything else at zero.

What should I do if I slip and buy something?

Count it as a slip, not as the end of the day. Write down what it was and what triggered it, then keep going until midnight. One coffee does not cancel the other 23 hours, and the trigger you wrote down is the most useful thing the day can teach you.
